"Generosity vs Greed" (40 Days of Wisdom for Lent)

Honor the Lord with your wealth
and with the first and best part of all your income.
Do not hold back anything good
from those who are entitled to it
when you have the power to do so.
When you have the good thing with you, do not tell your neighbor,
“Go away!
Come back tomorrow.
I’ll give you something then.”
(Proverbs 3:9,27-28 GW)

Those who give generously receive more,
but those who are stingy with what is appropriate will grow needy.
Generous persons will prosper;
those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
People curse those who hoard grain,
but they bless those who sell it.
(Proverbs 11:24-26 CEB)

Those who acquire things unjustly gain trouble for their house,
but those who hate bribes will live.
(Proverbs 15:27 CEB)

Those who are gracious to the poor lend to the Lord,
and the Lord will fully repay them.
(Proverbs 19:17 CEB)

Those who close their ears to the cries of the poor
will themselves call out but receive no answer.
The lazy desire things constantly,
but the righteous give without holding back.
(Proverbs 21:13,26 CEB)

Happy are generous people,
because they give some of their food to the poor.
Oppressing the poor to get rich
and giving to the wealthy lead only to poverty.
(Proverbs 22:9,16 CEB)

If your enemies are starving, feed them some bread;
if they are thirsty, give them water to drink.
By doing this, you will heap burning coals on their heads,
and the Lord will reward you.
(Proverbs 25:21-22 CEB)

Whoever becomes wealthy through unfair loans and interest
collects them for the one who is kind to the poor.
Whoever gives to the poor lacks nothing.
Whoever ignores the poor receives many curses.
(Proverbs 28:8,27 GW)

“I’ve asked you for two things.
Don’t keep them from me before I die:
Keep vanity and lies far away from me.
Don’t give me either poverty or riches.
Feed me only the food I need,
or I may feel satisfied and deny you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
or I may become poor and steal
and give the name of my God a bad reputation.
The bloodsucking leech has two daughters—“Give!” and “Give!”
Three things are never satisfied.
Four never say, “Enough!”:
the grave,
a barren womb,
a land that never gets enough water,
a fire that does not say, “Enough!”
(Proverbs 30:7-9,15-16 GW)
